Attendance Policies

Expectations

Attending class regularly and being on time has a direct effect on a student’s success in meeting course requirements for high school graduation.  Parents are requested to encourage students to attend school punctually every day unless they are truly ill and to schedule vacations during student non-attendance days.   Students who are absent from school for any length of time (one period, one day, or multiple days) must have the absence verified by a phone call or a note from a parent/guardian within three days.  Attendance procedures will be followed even after the student’s 18th birthday.

Attendance Voicemail

The school provides a voicemail line, available 24 hours a day, to report absences; call 209-257-7344.  Communication between the home and school is a major key in correcting poor attendance.  Calls to the school attendance office, 209-257-7300, are welcomed.

Extracurricular Eligibility

A student must be in attendance the regular school day of scheduled practice, contest, or extra-curricular activity to be eligible to participate.  There are possible exceptions, subject to interpretation by the principal or his designee.

Closed Campus

Amador High School is a closed campus.  Students must check out through the Attendance Office before leaving the school grounds.  Students are not allowed to leave campus without a written note, fax, phone call, or a personal appearance by the parent/guardian prior to the school authorizing the student to leave campus.
Parents’ responsibility:

  • Write a note containing the student’s first and last name, date, time and reason for the student leaving school.
  • Include your signature and phone number where you can be reached.

Student’s responsibility:

  • Bring the note to the attendance office before school, at the break, or at lunch to receive a checkout slip.
  • Show the checkout slip to the teacher at the beginning of class and watch the clock to leave on time.
  • Agree with parent/guardian on a place to be picked up.

Auto-dial Messages

An auto-dial message goes out each night to inform parents if their student was absent or late to one or more classes.  This message includes our phone number to call and report the reason for your student’s absence.  Failure to clear an absence by a telephone call or a note within three days will result in disciplinary action for the student.

Tardies

Unexcused tardies during the day will result in lunch detention or further disciplinary action.  Parents will be advised of student tardies through the automated message system

Clearing Absences

Verification of absences is to be made by telephone (please use the voicemail line, 209-257-7344) or note from the parent/guardian with the following information included:

  1.  Student’s full name
  2. Date of absence
  3. Reason for absence
  4. Parent’s/guardian’s signature/name

Failure to clear an absence by a telephone call or a note within three days will result in disciplinary action for the student.  A student who attempts to clear an absence through a forged note or an impersonated phone call will have the absence declared a truancy and suspension will result for the falsification of information to a school employee.

Truancy

A student who is absent without a valid excuse will be subject to disciplinary action.  Students without a valid excuse are considered truant for the following reasons:

  1.  Absent three full days in a school year
  2. Tardy or absent for more than any 30-minute period during the day on three occasions in a school year.

Continued truancy may result in a student’s grade being affected and further disciplinary actions.

Prearranged Absences / Independent Study

Students who foresee being absent for 5 or more days for justifiable reasons may request an Independent Study Contract to prevent loss of learning time.  The Independent Study Contract must be requested at least 4 days prior to the first absence date (unless there is an emergency) and completed and returned to the Attendance Office prior to leaving.  Assignments must be turned in to the attendance office on the first day the student returns to receive full credit for missed assignments.
